The definition of a panic attack according to medicine, is when a person has a sudden and abrupt experience of feeling intense discomfort or intense fear, these feelings can also be accompanied by many other symptoms. When the attacks strike, they can make you feel like you are about to have a heart attack, or are on the edge of turning crazy. These attacks can be incredibly frightening when they occur, however they are not, in essence, dangerous, simply a wave of adrenalin rushing through your body. The Adrenalin is responsible for the symptoms you feel during the attack such as dizziness, heart pumping, loss of control, hyperventilation and an ‘out of body’ experience.


According to estimated figures, it is thought that ten percent of the population either have, or will probably experience, some kind of panic attack during their lives. However this will only develop into a full blown panic disorder for approximately five percent of those affected.


How do we define anxiety?


Those people who have never experienced a panic attack tend not to understand what and where the concern is coming from, and may even believe these attacks are being over-exaggerated. Anyone however who has experienced these feelings and suffer from panic attacks will tell you that they can be the most frightening experience you’ve ever had in your life. Doctors do not really understand the reason why people suffer from panic attacks, they don’t even know for sure why some people do and other people don’t. There are many remedies on the market and some sufferers may find themselves dependant on medication to ease the severity, whilst others seek out self help anxiety courses or techniques and methods to help combat their disorder.


Numerous studies have been carried out to try and explain the cause of panic disorders. The results are still inconclusive, however many who have suffered with attacks feel that the main cause is due to a prolonged feeling of stress and worry. While it’s a fact of life that we all have stress at some time in our life, however when it builds up in an individual it can cause them to start developing a panic or anxiety disorder.


We can only take on so much stress and worry, until we start to burst at the seams, unable to contain the negative emotion any longer. The flood gates open and this can be manifested as a full on panic attack. Other factors considered are childhood events or experiences such as emotional or physical abuse.
