Anxiety attacks vs panic attacks


We are all very familiar with both anxiety attacks and also panic attack, but are they one in the same?


Is there any difference between to two? If I'm having a panic attack then surely I'm panicking about something, so in essence they must be one in the same aren't they?


This really isn't the case, many health professionals will approach the two disorders in a very different way in order to ascertain which of these you are suffering from. Some major factors in determining one from the other is the length of time your symptoms may last and also have sever these symptoms are. It is here that they begin the analysis of anxiety attacks versus panic attacks. When we experience a panic attack, the symptoms (although incredibly strong and powerful at the time) tend to come on very suddenly, however generally don't last very long. In the case of anxiety attack, the symptoms gradually gather pace and are built up over a longer period of time, during which they become much more intense.


These symptoms, in turn, once they have started to appear will tend to last a lot longer in the sufferer from anxiety attack and are referred to as 'Chronic'. Even though the two have their differences, when reviewed and discussed, panic attacks and anxiety attacks are generally grouped together when it comes to treatment.

Whether the attack is an anxiety attack or a panic attack, the sufferer will experience feelings of apprehension, fear or fright. Sufferers of anxiety can very often feel that the anxiety is waiting in the shadows, ready to pounce at any moment. This can affect the way they go about their day to day lives and can be very debilitating. They may realise that there are no rational reasons for feeling so anxious, however they may be hounded by a feeling of impending danger. Some often feel like they are about to die. For most people, anxiety is a normal feeling which we will all experience at some point in our lives, however when this anxiety becomes overpowering then it is at this point a sufferer should look to seek medical help. Some common signs of anxiety attacks can be.

Contradictory to anxiety attacks, those who suffer panic attacks may not always experience the same symptoms as those struck by anxiety. The feelings of panic may come on strong and be incredibly intense, but they will not last nearly as long as those experienced in and anxiety attack. A few of the symptoms for both disorders are common to the both. The following are some of the symptoms for panic attack sufferers.

 

Feeling like they are about to faint or even die, Unable to think clearly, Nausea or stomach pains Hot or cold flashes, Irregular breathing or heart beat,  Dizziness, Pain or discomfort in the chest

Increased heart rate, Feeling that death is coming, Shaking, Temporary loss of control, Numbness, Excessive sweating, Tight chest, Hot or cold flashes, Nausea, Feeling of choking

The question then isn't really anxiety attacks versus panic attacks, the real questions what to do if you think you may be suffering from either of these disorders. Many of us will suffer from either one or the other, or sometimes both of these unfortunate disorders, and if so, it's even more important that medical treatment is taken, to ensure these do not escalate into more serious complications. It is imperative that if you feel you are experiencing symptoms and are suffering from either of the above - that you seek professional medical assistance. Don't try to diagnose yourself. Make sure you get the appropriate diagnosis, as many of the symptoms above can also be indicators of more serious medical issues.
