It’s surprising how many people in todays age can suffer from anxiety and panic attacks.


Some of us may be suffering from an attack and will not even realise it, brushing it off as ‘over-stressed’ or simply ‘concerned’. Others may strongly believe they are in the midst of an attack and it can be something very different indeed.


Those people who have experienced such anxiety attacks on a regular basis, generally feel that unless you have actually experienced an attack, they are incredibly difficult to describe. Sufferers state that an attack can be the most frightening thing that they have ever had to experience, but this feeling is still very difficult to explain to those who have never been struck by such attacks.

Anxiety Attacks - What do they feel like?

I know myself now, that what I experienced in my life was in fact a panic attack. I had never felt that way before, I could not think, or speak, and it felt like my feet had been nailed to the floor. My head felt like someone had shoved a pillow into my brain through my ear and it was eating my brain. I actually wanted to die, and thought my heart was going to explode. That was my experience, however this will differ from person to person. One person may experience one set of symptoms, and another person may feel an anxiety attack through entirely different symptoms. They are both having an attack, but experiencing it in very different ways.


Listed below are a few symptoms, which give some indication as to what an attack can feel like


Increased heart rate | Shaking | Tight chest | Excessive sweating | Nausea | Feeling of choking | Temporary loss of control | Numbness | Hot or cold flashes | Feeling you are about to die


The main symptoms you will experience from the above which are a true indicator of an anxiety attack are the Shortness of Breath, Increased Heart Rate, Tight Chest and the feeling of impending doom. These can be very frightening when experienced, but in reality are not harmful to you - these are a symptom and result of the anxiety and fear you are feeling.


Repeat sufferers are quicker to realise this and that they are in the midst of an attack, and able to deal better with the symptoms. One of the main contributors to the feeling of anxiety is the rush of adrenaline to the body, which causes the increased heart beat and also the sweating. If you can try and relax and breathe normally, this will stem the flow of the adrenaline to the blood stream and as the adrenaline disappears, your breathing and heartbeat should calm down in turn. Many sufferers can feel as if they are having a heart attack or stroke, which can make it very difficult to remain calm. However the reality is, the more scared they become, in tun, the stronger the symptoms of the anxiety attack become.


The body’s reaction to an anxiety attack is one of the most swift and damning. In addition to those symptoms mentioned earlier, the attacks can also cause symptoms which will affect the Bladder, Eyes, Stomach, Glands and the body’s major muscles. The massive overdose of adrenaline will put the body through it’s paces and it is these particular affects of an anxiety attack with can make the sufferer feel like they are about to die.


The severity of an anxiety attack can sometimes be determined by the strength of the symptoms experienced when the attack begins. If they can be recognised quickly by the sufferer, then the symptoms can often be stopped by concentrating on the causes.

Those who have suffered these attacks for months or even years, can often stop them or lessen the severity by using breathing exercises or applying techniques from learned therapy.


Whilst we have covered the symptoms indicative of anxiety attacks, those who suffer from anxiety also need to be aware that these symptoms can also be associated with other more serious health issues.
