Biological treatments / medicines prescribed for anxiety and panic disorders work as follows.
Sufferers will be prescribed drugs with one of the three chemicals present in the medication. In turn the brain will receive an extra 'boost' from the addition (or top up) of this chemical in their body. These chemical 'top ups' are used to ensure that the brain is getting enough of the chemicals it needs to function smoothly, and they are there to create a balance in the brain activity.
Many health professionals believe that a chemical imbalance in the brain can be linked almost directly to symptoms of panic attacks, anxiety and depression. For sufferers of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) this imbalance can be proven and in these instances prescriptive assistance is used in the majority of cases.
Most popular (or wide spread) of the three chemical treatments is an SSRI (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor) This medication increases the amount of Serotonin released into the brain (interestingly enough you can also find small amounts of serotonin in Bananas!). Starting with smaller doses of the drug, doctors may increase the amount gradually until the correct balance is reached within the brain. Once this equilibrium is found then the anxiety and panic should begin to subside.
After SSRI, the next most commonly used in conjunction with curing anxiety is known as SRNI (serotonin–norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor). This is a combination of both Serotonin and also Norepinephrine, administered to re address the balance of both in the brain.
Lastly the third treatment is MAOIs (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors) this is a mixture of all three chemicals. This last treatment would be prescribed to sufferers with and imbalance of all three in their body and brain.
A visit to your GP should help them to be able to diagnose which of these chemical imbalances you may be suffering from (if indeed you are). In a large number of cases because any imbalance is affecting all three of the chemicals in your brain, then you may be prescribed MAOI treatment to address the levels of each of the three.
Sufferers of regular and extreme panic or anxiety attacks may also be prescribed more addictive and powerful medicines such as Valium, Klopin or Xanax. Within the brain there are further chemicals present (the main protagonist being Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA). GABA is widely thought to strongly affect the portion of the brain which copes with anxiety and depression. These more powerful medications are designed to work against GABA in order that they can correct the affects and once again bring stability to the brain.
Hopefully this gives you a pretty good insight into the various options available when we discuss medicines or biological treatments for anxiety and panic attacks. You may feel at present that this is not the route you would like to take, however if your attacks start to increase and become stronger, this treatment may be something that could be wise to consider. Instances of people taking this course of treatment are actually more common than you might imagine. They can help restore balance not only in the brain but also help you reclaim a life without anxiety or depression.
We would strongly advise that if you have only just recently started having symptoms of anxiety or panic, that perhaps you only look to take one of the available remedies and in a very low dose, temporarily while you investigate alternative treatments available. Many people are none too keen on taking medication (drugs) particularly on a regular basis, which is understandable and to be admired, however there is no need to suffer more than you need to whilst searching for the perfect remedy for you. These can be a useful ‘stop gap’ if used sensibly and treated with respect.
Medical treatments are used for the easement of the symptoms of panic and anxiety by millions every day. Whilst you may not see these as a long term solution, they are at least worth investigating as they could be the key to the door of your mental freedom!
Of all the organs we have in our bodies, there is no doubt that the brain is the most complex of all of them.
Many researchers of behavioural patterns are still in agreement with Einstein's theory that even the geniuses of this world will only use less than ten percent of the brains full potential. This given, small wonder then that many doctors will look to the prescription of biological treatment as an aid to those suffering from extreme anxiety and panic attacks.
When we speak about biological treatment we are of course referring to medication (or drugs) that will help sufferers gain relief and aim to give them some stability to their lives. Within our brains we have three chemicals present and it is these chemicals that are responsible for carrying messages from within our brain from one section to another (via Synapse). These chemicals are more commonly referred to as 'neurotransmitters' however the names of the chemicals themselves are Dopamine, Serotonin and Norepinephrine.
