Leaving you not only stressed at work, handling the all the additional responsibility, but also causing additional anxiety at work, leaving you having to watch your back and fearing the next round of redundancies.

The following tips targeted at reducing stress in the workplace have been compiled in an effort to help you deal with anxiety at work and are all useful coping strategies for stress.

Stress and Anxiety at Work
   Take care of yourself

By taking good care of yourself physically, you can help to reduce the effects of stress and anxiety at work. Take regular exercise, join a gym perhaps or go cycling. Make sure you eat enough and you eat properly. If you take care of yourself this should give you the energy and stamina you need to deal with any work place stress the daily pressures you may face.

Stress and Anxiety at Work
   Start looking around

Start looking around for another job if the pressure and stress of your current employment is becoming overwhelming. Simply reminding yourself that you are of value to the workplace and that you deserve to be treated with respect can greatly improve your own self esteem. Taking the decision to improve your situation will in turn make you feel better and provide a future to look forward to. There are numerous reputable sites online to help you find the right job for you. Use them to their full potential and get that CV out there!

Stress and Anxiety at Work
   Find a pattern

Look back on the history of your employment, both with your current employer and also any previous jobs. Be honest with yourself and note down any instances of work related stress you may currently be, or have in the past experienced. Look to see if you can ascertain any patterns in your employment history or any recurring instances where you have become stressed at work. It may be that this highlights to you that you have tended to work in succession of stressful and abusive environments. If this is the case, then you can start to plan a strategy to help you avoid making the same mistakes when applying for new jobs.

Stress and Anxiety at Work
   Break it down

It may be that you are not able to find alternative employment (or do not wish to). List all the things that contribute to your feelings of stress in the work place. Once these are clear in your mind and broken down, you can look to create a plan to deal with each situation.

Stress and Anxiety at Work
   Know your rights

Start a diary of those points and situations which are causing the stress and anxiety at work. There is a lot more help out there now and new laws which side with the employee in these situations. These new laws are there to protect the employee from abusive bosses and co-workers. They are designed to help you confront these situations and make those responsible accountable for their actions. Research these laws and employment clauses as you may need the documentation to hand in the future for legal purposes.

Stress and Anxiety at Work
   Take a break

Take your breaks! Many of us are worked so hard that we will skip lunch and start to find ourselves working through our allocated rest breaks, just to get the work done. Take these breaks. Find a quiet place and possibly meditate (this sounds a little odd perhaps, but is a great technique of how to handle stress at work) or find other ways that help you cope with the stress and anxiety. Go to the restroom when you can, and catch yourself some private quiet time.

Stress and Anxiety at Work
   Seek Help

If the anxiety at work has become unbearable and you feel you are unable to cope with the pressure alone, make an appointment to see a counselor. These professionals are trained to help you, and will be able to advise you on the best actions to cope with and stop the stress and anxiety at work.

Stress and Anxiety at Work
   Keep it at work

Don’t take your work home with you (figuratively speaking), don’t allow the stress in your home life as well as at work. Imagine there is an invisible drawer at work where you can lock away the stress and anxiety of that day before you leave the office.

Stress and Anxiety at Work
   Stay focussed

Don’t act up or rise to any abuse at work. If you behave professionally at all times then you will be in a better position for any future confrontation or recriminations. Even if those around you (and above you) are behaving unprofessionally it is important that you remain dignified.

Never, EVER tolerate physical or sexual abuse in the workplace, keep notes on everything and seek legal representation.

Be careful however......

Most of us have experienced at some point in our lives, and can also relate to, stress and anxiety at work.

To a certain degree and at varying levels work stress is to be expected, after all for most of us work is more a means to an end rather than a life-long ambition, and for many of us the hours we work and the pressure that can be applied can cause us to become somewhat overwhelmed at work. If you are overworked and heaped with stress at work, it's important that you start to become more organised and aware of this and to start a plan of action which works for you and is aimed at managing stress at work.

Your boss may be a control freak, or just plain psychotic. Many managers are power hungry and only interested in one thing - them (not you). Being in a position of authority or power can often show the darker side of individuals. In particular with those who are essentially immature and rely on their standing within a business to bridge the gap in their own inadequacies and failings.
